The UC Davis DataLab is seeking to support and foster community activities and engagement in data science at UC Davis. We are soliciting brief (~1 paragraph) applications from community members seeking funds to support:

  • new and existing community engagement (working groups, forum management)
  • community building (e.g., online activities)
  • online training events
  • in-person discussion groups and book clubs
  • contests and surveys
  • (online) conference registration/attendance fees
  • hardware or equipment to support activities and events

as well as other activities and efforts! We are intentionally casting a broad net, so please feel free to propose whatever it is you are interested in doing. A goal of this call is to foster community, and thus activities should involve multiple labs and/or be open to or serve the larger community.

Supported activities should start within the 2021 calendar year.

Funds can go to digital subscriptions and infrastructure, material purchase, equipment, or other business expenses. You may request salary/stipend support for undergraduate students and graduate students, but note that overall funds are limited and we expect allocations to be between $500 and $1000.

We expect most purchased/supported resources to be publicly available to the UC Davis community by default, although this is not a requirement if there is strong justification for keeping them private. Likewise, closed-source/commercial software purchases should be justified.

We plan to accept proposals based on a sum total allocation of $7,500 per quarter, and will consider proposals that run through the end of 2021. We anticipate renewing this call for spring, summer, and fall quarters.

All UC Davis undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff are welcome to apply! You do not need to be a DataLab affiliate, although current affiliates and members of Research/Learning Clusters are welcome to apply.

The deadline for proposals is noon PST Feb 22nd, 2021, and we anticipate making decisions by Tuesday, March 5th, 2021.

Applicants should expect short summaries of accepted proposals, together with a contact e-mail address and brief bios, to be posted publicly on the DataLab website.
