To help our research community discover and grow their data science skills and gain a competitive edge in today’s data-driven workplace, DataLab has launched the Text Mining and Natural Language Processing pathway as part of the UC Davis GradPathways Institute for Professional Development’s micro-credential initiative. This program enables UC Davis graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to track and showcase skills learned outside the traditional curriculum by earning digital badges that document and certify their learning journey.
Skills in text mining and natural language processing (NLP) are in growing demand for research and application across domains and industries. The Text Mining and Natural Language Processing pathway is the newest in a series of data science pathways developed by DataLab, with pre-requisite workshops being taught this Fall 2022. This new pathway provides an introduction to working with, analyzing, and modeling unstructured text data, and provides exposure to additional topics including PDF scraping, optical character recognition (OCR), and more. Badges can be earned along the way to completing a micro-credential by participating in training sessions and completing associated assessment activities.
This new pathway complements DataLab’s existing Research Computing Pathway, which focuses on core programming technologies and skills including command line, SQL, R, Python, and reproducible and responsible research methods.
Additional new DataLab supported pathways under development include:
- Data Visualization (from design principles to creating reproducible static, dynamic, and immersive research viz), launching Spring 2023!
- Geospatial Data (from coordinate reference systems to cartographic data visualization and spatial analysis);
