Student analyst (1 position available)

This position supports DataLab’s research, training and community initiatives by providing communications and analytical assistance to DataLab’s Associate and Executive Directors. The student will assist with communications and outreach for DataLab’s website/blog, e-newsletters, and social media platforms, including content development, production, distribution, monitoring and engagement. The student will engage in instructional assistance, including classroom support, and projects centered around data collection, management and reporting. The student will perform other duties/special projects as assigned, including assistance with DataLab events.  This is a hybrid in-person/remote position at University of California, Davis campus at DataLab, which is located on the third floor of Shields Library. Some work requires on-site presence, while other work can occur remotely. The nature of this work requires extended periods of sitting and working at a computer.

Applicants should have:

  • Excellent writing, organizational, time management and multitasking skills
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer services skills to effectively interact with individuals of varying ages, occupations, societal backgrounds, perspectives, and purpose
  • Clerical and instructional support skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and comparable Google products (documents, sheets, sides, etc.), and Zoom
  • Familiarity with web, social media and general office best practices.
  • Familiarity with task management and development systems, primarily GitHub
  • Familiarity with web platforms, primarily WordPress
  • Familiarity with data management best practices
  • Personal experience with a wide range of digital communications and social media platforms (twitter, instagram, etc.)
  • Demonstrable abilities to compose professional correspondence and write for various platforms including email, newsletters, web pages, blog posts, and social media
  • Demonstrable proficiency in using the R programming language for data cleaning visualization and report generation, including use of Rmarkdown
  • Ability to quickly learn new digital platforms and technologies
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidentiality of information and materials
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal direction as well as interface in a matrixed team environment

Preference will be given to applicants able to provide strong writing (paper from a previous course or other professional writing) and programming samples (R code from a class project, homework, independent project, etc.). Experience with graphic design for digital and print media (including use of Canva) desired but not required. A background check is required for this position.

Student Assistant (2 positions open)

Student assistants support DataLab’s research, training and community initiatives by providing front desk, classroom, office hours and events reception support, and work on other duties/special tasks as assigned by DataLab’s Director, Associate Director, and Administrative Assistant. The receptionist will welcome and respond to in-person and virtual guests, faculty, staff, and students in an equitable, pleasant, professional, and attentive manner. The work schedule is 12 hours per week. This is an in-person position at the University of California, Davis within the DataLab, which is located on the third floor of Shields Library. 

Applicants should have:

  • Interpersonal communication and customer service skills to effectively interact with individuals of varying ages, occupations, education, perspectives, and purpose, in an equitable and professional manner
  • Excellent writing, organizational, time management, and multitasking skills
  • Ability to compose professional correspondence
  • Strong analytical and data entry skills, and attention to detail
  • Clerical and instructional support skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and comparable Google products (documents, sheets, sides, forms, etc.)
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidentiality of information and materials
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal direction as well as interface in a matrixed team environment
  • Familiarity with or ability to learn WordPress and task management systems.
