The UC Davis DataLab: Data Science and Informatics is seeking a postdoctoral scholar with an emphasis in applying advanced Data Science/computational methods to advance research in the health domain. The position is for one year, with the expectation of extension for a second year. The postdoctoral scholar will report to DataLab Executive Director (Associate Professor Carl Stahmer), and will work directly with the DataLab Director for Translational Science (Professor Vladimir Filkov), who will serve as the scholar’s primary mentor, as well DataLab staff and research partners. 

Background

DataLab promotes and supports research and education in data-driven discovery across all colleges, schools and disciplines on the Davis campus,  coordinating data-science training activities across campus, and also providing consulting and collaborative services for research projects, in addition to its own research projects in data science.  The activities span the entire data pipeline, including data acquisition, management, cleaning, transformation, visualization, modeling, dissemination/publication, high-performance computing, and involve aspects of data governance, security, privacy and ethics.

Duties

The Postdoctoral scholar will engage with DataLab partners to provide Data Science expertise in order to advance domain specific research and also engage in independent research and education in the area of Data Science methods in order to advance DataLab’s applied research agenda. 

Specifically, the Postdoctoral Scholar will:

  1. Participate in collaborative research projects DataLab conducts with researchers across campus, with an emphasis on developing a lasting institutional collaboration framework and know-how.
  2. Lead training activities (workshops, etc.) in Data Science or a related field, upon supervisor approval.
  3. Mentor and help foster researcher and student interactions via Datalab activities and affiliates programs.
  4. Participate in, and help organize, DataLab initiatives and events.

Additionally, opportunities for teaching one or more undergraduate level courses can be pursued at the discretion of the scholar, Directors, and relevant academic programs.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD in a field related to Data Science, i.e., either in Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, Information Science, etc., OR in an applied domain with a research background that contains a significant emphasis on quantitative approaches and skillsets including data analysis and high-level programming. Candidates with experience and interest in Signal Processing techniques, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and/or image recognition will be given priority as will candidates with a keen interest and experience in multi-disciplinary collaborations in various fields. Scholarly independence, the ability to manage scientific projects, and effective written and oral communication are essential.
