Health Data Science Brown Bag Talk

Tools and Approaches for Modern Data-Intensive Research in Biology: Workflows, Cloud Compatibility and more

Presented by Dr. Titus Brown

Abstract: As biological data sets grow in volume, velocity, and variety, biological data science must adopt new conceptual and technical approaches to analyzing data. The Lab for Data Intensive Biology works extensively with approaches variously adopted from open source, open science, data reuse, training, and cloud computing. In this talk we will discuss a conceptual overview of the challenges we have faced and (in at least some circumstances) overcome and tie it to our day-to-day practices. Keywords and terms that apply include but are not limited to version control, cloud computing, workflow automation, Conda, social media, and FAIR.

Biography: Dr. Titus Brown is a professor in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where he and his lab discuss open science, reproducibility, training, and the future of data science.  Dr. Brown is the Faculty Director of Community Initiatives at the DataLab.
