The California Election 2020 Data Challenge is a month-long data science + civic engagement competition designed to leverage public data to help us understand this year’s ballot initiatives! Participant teams built data literacy and visualization skills and contributed to qualitatively-informed civic dialogue by applying data science to questions about current CA ballot initiatives. Three winning teams finalists will present their Challenge projects along with addresses from keynote speakers on data literacy and civic engagement Mindy Romero (founder and director of the Center for Inclusive Democracy), Jesse Salinas (Yolo County Clerk), and UC Davis Vice Provost of Digital Scholarship and University Librarian MacKenzie Smith.

Our team finalists include:

• Team install.packages(“tidywitches”) explored parolee voting rights restoration (propositon 17) by considering parolee geography and their potential influence on local elections.

• Team MissDemeanors examined proposition 20 and the historical relationship between legislation and prison overcrowding in our state.

• Team Catch-22 examined campaign financing and endorsement for proposition 22, the most expensive proposition in CA history.
